GEDI is on the ISS (“May the forest be with it”)

I’m a little late on this (thanks to Eric Desfonds of Excelitas for the reminder this morning), but GEDI launched on Wednesday, Dec. 5, on a SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket. It’s being integrated on the International Space Station as I type these words.

Jim Pontius, the Goddard Space Flight Center’s GEDI program manager, was kind enough to show me this remarkable forest-measuring lidar instrument when I visited in October 2017 during a crash reporting trip for my book, “The Laser That’s Changing the World.” Great to see that the local NBC station here in Denver ran a story on it, too.
