So I hear you’re voting for Trump.
No, that’s a good idea.
If you want to stop immigrants from taking all our jobs because you’re dying to work in a slaughterhouse or atop a roof, no question, Trump’s the guy.
If you’re from an hollowed-out somewhere, absolutely vote for a man who rails against industrial subsidies for growing numbers of green-energy and electric-vehicle jobs.
If you’re an Arab-American minority whose relatives were the focus of Trump’s Muslim ban, or acquainted with hard-working undocumented Spanish speakers from parts south whom Trump’s military would round up and deport en masse.
For sure, if you’re a low-wage worker, a man who routinely screwed his own employees and courts management, not labor, is the guy for you.
If you’re a military type, someone who ignores thousands of years of foreign- policy best practices because he counts pennies while actively undermining the democracy you pledged to protect is your man.
If you’re a mainstream Republican who values stability and low taxes, by all means go with an innumerate radical who makes up debt-exploding policies on a whim.
If you’re a pro-life single-issue voter, Trump will most certainly interdict all mailings of misoprostol/mifepristone, just as he stopped all fentanyl from entering the country.
If you’re in law enforcement, go with a convicted felon whose primary motivation for seeking office, besides a megalomaniacal thirst for power and adulation, is to stay out of jail.
If you’re looking to identify with like-minded folks and are looking to join a cult rather than rooting for a particular sports team or joining a religious or charitable organization, MAGA is a solid option.
If you prefer to believe what you want to believe in large part because Fox News keeps repeating it — rather than what your eyes and ears are trying to tell you, yes, Trump.
If you’re thinking that democracy is bulletproof and that living in an authoritarian state is way underrated, cast your vote accordingly.
If you believe that “common sense” decision-making should be entirely decoupled from actual experience or accumulated expertise, the choice for is clear.
I could go on.
About the malignant narcissism; about the incessant, baldfaced lies; about the nastiness; about the false machismo from of a draft-dodging coward; about the utter, complete, lack of empathy; the misogyny; he fear-mongering; the obvious senility; the demonstrable incompetence; the racism, the xenophobia; the choice of an obviously craven and patently dangerous VP candidate in Vance (because he is not only twisted and feckless, but also silky-smooth and scary-smart); the patience for fools as long as they lick his ass.
But I won’t.
I’ll just say it’s shocking that an election between a highly competent centrist and a dim, lunatic fascist or whatever the fuck Donald Trump is — because he’s not a Republican in any historical sense — should not be this close.
I’ll also say I’m scared for us. And deeply, deeply disappointed in so many who in their heart of hearts know they’re doing the wrong thing supporting this guy, even if for the right reasons.
But your mind’s made up anyway.
